Kids who are hyperactive may benefit from omega-3 fatty acids after. This can be very beneficial to kids who are diagnosed with ADHD or those that doesn’t have it but have still some behavior problems.
Due to behavior problems, kids may experience related problems that can affect school and even social relationships. Among parents, behavior management seemed a hard job and can add a toll in their family management. Parents with kids who have ADHD most often result to medications and therapies.
But experts say that omega-3 fatty acid supplements may be a lot helpful and may be healthy alternative.
Omega-3 and Behavior
Omega-3 has always been linked to kids’ learning capability, brain development and behavior. A child’s level of long chain omega-3 DHA in the blood may predict how a child can concentrate in tasks and learn.
The higher the omega-3 level in the blood, the more likely that a kid can behave rightly and learn better. Better reading and memory is also found out to be a characteristic of kids who have regular intake of omega-3.
Kids who are studied by the researchers of University of Oxford found out that those who were given a significant dose of omega-3 fatty acids had improved, had fewer behavior problems and better reading and memory.
Some countries that have mainly fish eating regions have also been found out to have the benefits of omega-3. In the Oxford’s study mentioned, the parent’s of the studied kids admitted that their children ate fish less than twice a week and some never eat fish at all.
Omega-3 and ADHD
Most kids who are hyperactive are sometimes with ADHD, but not all the time. It has an unknown cause but has been treated in the process. And in recent studies, omega-3 fatty acids seemed to be influencing ADHD symptoms a lot.
The ADHD symptoms that are significantly reduced by several studies are inattention, hyperactivity and being more impulsive. Cognitive problems, inattention and restlessness are far improved after a continuous intake of supplement high in omega-3.
The study result suggests that kids’ behavior can be influenced and altered by increase of fatty acids and incorporation of them in the diet plan.
Diet and Supplements
Diet for omega-3 enriched foods is healthy option. But then most of the time, kids just hate to eat food that are rich with these fatty acids. And most of the time, fishes and other sea foods aren’t kids favorite. Vegetables too that are rich with omega-3 fatty acids may take time to incorporate in kid’s diet. But this is where parenting should come in; conditioning kids of the benefits of the diet should be done and should be inculcated rightly.
Secondly, supplements should only act as supplements to kids’ diet. And be careful of the supplements your kids take, always ask for a pedia’s say about it.
Kids’ behavior can significantly be enhanced by omega-3 fatty acid intake. And once behavior is improved, the positive outcome in kid’s diet can come in as well.
