Our Internal Clocks

Have you ever noticed that us mommies have these internal clocks that never fail us?

My son recently underwent surgery to have his tonsils and adenoids out.  The doctor recommended to my husband and me that we give him his pain medication every four hours for the first week after his surgery.  That meant waking up every four hours for seven nights straight to get him to take his medicine.  I think as moms, we come programmed with these little internal alarm clocks for instances just like this.  I never set my alarm once and woke up every four hours (give or take 15 minutes) to give him the meds.  It’s like our brains never shut down or forget, especially when it comes to our kids.

It’s the same with our hearing too, have you noticed? We can hear a child crying or getting sick even when there is noise and commotion.  We are especially tuned into the sounds of our kids.  Now, I’m not knocking my husband, he’s an amazing father, but he is lacking these “internal signals”.  He has slept through the kids’ crying, never notices when one crawls into bed with us, and just doesn’t have the little internal signals.  And I’m going to generalize here….I think it’s true of a lot of men.  It’s not that they are incapable, I just think that us women were just given a little extra in this department.

Do any of you have any special talents your partner does not?  I’d love to know about all you talented, funny, smart women out there!

About Dana

I'm a wife, mother and stay-at-home mom for my three crazy kiddos. In my former life I was a Food Scientist and Product Developer for The Coca-Cola Company. I quit to stay at home and spend more time with my kids. Once that happened, I realized I needed an outlet for my creativity so I started an embroidery business out of my home. In my downtime (what's that???) I love to cook, garden and read. I started blogging as a way to connect with other parents, share stories, find some humor in life and a new outlet for my creativity.
